In India massive boom is there in the retail sector. Large Companies retail chain has reached to small town and villages even after covering metro politian cities. But enough professionals are not available to go parallel with the market scopes. So retail industry also promoting retail courses to match requirement and availability of experts in the retail sector.
Need of professionals
According to Retailers Association of India provided statistics retail sector by this year 2009 will provide job to 20-25 million professionals. At present in organized retail sector two million skilled professionals are needed. In India total turnover in retail business is of about U.S. $ 260 billion currently.
Course Need
Retailers Association of India (Mumbai) took initiative to start retail course with IGNOU being countrywide nature of IGNOU. To modernize higher education in the country and retail sector Retailers Association of India is in process of tying up with 15 other educational institutions other than IGNOU. Eighty per cent of the country retail market is still unorganized. Retail market can invest in technology but without proper Education they can’t modernize the sector.
Diploma in Retailing
IGNOU has launched undergraduate course of one year with the name of Diploma is Retailing. Course session starts from January and there will be two semesters of 6 months each. Course medium will be English. Education qualification eligibility required for is 10 +2. However, admission will be given on the basis of merit. Retail industry sponsored candidates will get direct entry in this course. During this course students may get scholarship, experience to work in retail shops and on performance basis they can also get regular job after completion of the course.
